Polybed system comprises a 100mm layer of lightweight geosynthetic aggregate, manufactured from recycled expanding polystyrene, surrounding a 100mm diameter corrugated perforated single or twin wall plastic pipe.

Encased in polyethylene netting, the product is provided in 3-metre sections with an overall finished diameter of 300mm.  These lightweight and flexible sections are simply joined together with a rapid click fit connection and can be quickly laid in the drainage trench by one or two people without the requirement for specialist skills.

The design of the system enables storage and flow characteristics that typically achieve 35% more surface area than natural aggregates, resulting in enhanced water treatment capabilities and a reduction in long-term clogging.

The totally prefabricated Polybed products can be installed up to 4 times quicker than a traditional solution and typically require only one operative and minimal plant.

The extreme lightweight nature of Polybed increases handling capability and reduces the risk of Health and Safety issues.

The Polybed products can be used in a wide range of applications from soakaways through to land drainage, as well as bio-treatment plants and septic tanks, sports pitch and golf course drainage and retaining wall and foundation drainage.

Some examples include:

Infiltration Techniques (SUDS)

Part H of the Building Regulations states that ‘source control is the preferred option in any SUDS scheme’ and that infiltration should be the method used wherever possible.

Polybed offers an ideal solution as it provides a large surface area through which water can pass, thereby enhancing the natural capacity of the ground to store and drain water.

Domestic and Stormwater Soakaways

The use of the Polybed system as a domestic soakaway provides an extremely cost-effective solution.  The impressive void ratio of 30-40% reduces the volume of excavation significantly compared to traditional natural aggregate methods.

It is generally agreed that linear trench soakaways offer enhanced performance over deep volume structures.

Bio-treatment Plants and Septic Tanks

The effluent from a septic tank is usually discharged to a drainage field via a series of perforated drains laid to a gradient, known as outfall drains.  The Polybed products can be simply incorporated into the shallow trenches used to form the sub-surface irrigation system.

Sports Pitch and Golf Course Drainage

The installation of a sub-surface drainage system is imperative to ensure the longevity of sports fields and golf courses.  Sports fields generally require a greater concentration of sub-surface drainage pipe installed at shallow depths.  Golf course fairways, bunkers and greens also require intensive irrigation.  The Polybed system is ideally suited to these applications.

Retaining Wall and Foundation Drainage

The Polybed system can be easily installed at the back of retaining walls and foundation drainage to prevent the build-up of hydrostatic pressure.

Land Drains

Land drainage is primarily carried out to lessen the effects of standing water which can lead to soft or muddy soils.  Use of the Polybed product range will virtually eliminate these potential problems by draining surface water and conveying it in a controlled manner to a suitable outfall.
